Hittite Microwave Corporation announces a breakthrough in monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) design and manufacturing technology with the introduction of a new multifunction VCO product line. The MMIC product line's phase noise performance is suitable for most commercial communication systems, and Hittite has proven the technology is scalable between 3 and 30 GHz. The integrated circuit (IC) VCOs contain the resonator, negative resistance circuitry, tuning varactor, a divide-by-eight (8) to feed the PLL, and an output buffer amplifier. Novel design techniques coupled with high volume packaging and test methodology will reduce the component count and lower manufacturing costs of high volume microwave radio synthesizers. The product line consists of a C-Band VCO, HMC358MS8G, and two Ku-Band VCOs with integrated divide-by-eight (8) prescalers, models HMC398QS16G and HMC401QS16G.

The first of the new VCOs is the, HMC358MS8G, C-Band MMIC VCO with a buffer amplifier that operates from 5.6 to 6.8 GHz. The power output is >10 dBm from a 3.0V supply voltage. The HMC358MS8G is ideal for usage in the UNII, HiperLAN, Point-to-Point Radios and WLAN applications. The HMC398QS16G, 14.0 - 15.0 GHz, power output is >+6 dBm from a 5V supply voltage, while the HMC401QS16G, 13.2 - 13.5 GHz, power output is >-8 dBm from a 5V supply voltage. Both products are ideal for usage in the LMDS, Point-to-Point Radios, and VSAT applications. All of the products feature excellent phase noise performance over temperature, shock, and process due to their monolithic structure. No external resonators are needed for any of these products.
